What I said was: I Loved that poem. And John Hollander was also a fine Renaissance scholar. The Untuning of the Sky is the beautiful name of his classic work about the profound rupture between the medieval/Renaissance worldview and the new mechanism and determinism of the Newtonian era.
Oh, Janet — I really don’t know a thing about Hollander, so thank you for sharing this. As you know, I am fascinated by determinism (and am always trying to get my students to notice how they operate inside of it, and shouldn’t). We should talk.
